Engine rebuilds
We repair the typical Porsche engine problems: intermediate shaft bearing failure, scored and scuffed cylinders, cracked cylinders and liners, crankshaft bearing failure and snapped timing chains. Every engine is stripped and assessed before it is priced.

The Hartech approach
Rather than a set price for a replacement engine, an exchange engine or a flat-rate repair, we tailor each rebuild to the customer. At one end of the scale are owners who want only the bare essentials; at the other, owners who want to improve and strengthen as much as possible in a future-proofing exercise; and others need special features for racing.
In practice we strip the engine, assess the work needed to address the core problem, the thing it came in for, and identify any other immediate issues, to establish the minimum repair cost. We then look at the broader picture and assess the areas we regard as future weak spots, to provide further recommendations that strengthen and refresh other key areas. You choose how far to go, taking into account your budget and your plans for the car.
Our typical recommendations cover the intermediate shaft bearing, cylinder scoring, cracked cylinders and liners, crankshaft bearings and timing chain failure prevention. We can now also offer exchange intermediate shafts with larger, stronger bearings.

What we repair
IMS bearing failure
During a rebuild we fit the later, larger Porsche bearing where the engine can take it. For engines that cannot, we now offer an exchange intermediate shaft with a larger, stronger bearing. Neither is done blind: the shaft, its housing, chains and guides are checked with the engine apart.
Bore scoring
We machine out the original cast-in liner and fit our own closed-deck Nikasil-plated aerospace-alloy cylinders with matched forged pistons, on all six cylinders, not just the one that failed. The cylinders convert the block from open to closed deck, which also stiffens it.
Cracked cylinders and liners
All six cylinders are replaced with Hartech closed-deck Nikasil liners with matched pistons. A strengthened cylinder is guaranteed against cracking.
Crank bearing failure
New crankshaft main and thrust bearing sets and new big-end bearings are part of every rebuild package. On block-only work we insist on fitting our own performance crank bearings.
Timing chain failure
A new timing chain set with new guide rails goes into most rebuild packages, and the chain drive is inspected on every engine we strip.
Cylinder liners
To maximise the durability of our customers’ engines we replace all six cylinders with a full set of our closed-deck Nikasil-plated aerospace-alloy liners with matched forged CNC-machined pistons. The cylinders convert the block from open to closed deck, which increases its strength.
We machine out the original Porsche Lokasil cast-in liner preform and replace it with an aluminium alloy cylinder plated with Nikasil, as used in the 911 3.2 Carrera, 964, 993, 996 Turbo, 996 GT3 and 997 Turbo.
Like most leading engine designers we discounted cast iron and steel liners many years ago. They are cheaper, but they do not have the same expansion rates (leading to head gasket sealing issues and slipping or spinning liners), they transfer heat less well, and they wear faster over the long term. We have replaced many engines previously repaired that way after they failed again.

Rebuild prices
No two rebuilds are exactly the same, but the common faults all need a rebuild, so there are starting prices for the base work and package prices for the clusters of work most customers choose.
Prices are being reviewed against fluctuating parts prices. Ring 01204 302 809, option 1, for a current figure for your car.
Individual starting prices
| Work | Comprising | From, + VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Base engine rebuild, engine only | Strip, clean and prepare, reassemble with all new gaskets and seals (except valve stem oil seals at this stage). | £3,000 |
| Base engine rebuild, car and engine | Remove engine and gearbox, strip to long motor, rebuild as above, strip and check the induction system for debris, refit ancillaries and engine, new Porsche-approved oil, filter, coolant and power steering fluid, air conditioning re-gas if needed, road test over around 50 miles. | £4,250 |
| Block-only work | For a bare set of block halves: supply and fit six high-strength alloy Nikasil closed-deck wet liners and a Hartech performance piston set with rings. Hartech performance crank bearings are also required on block-only work. | £4,200 |
The base rebuild price does not include the internals needed to repair the damage, such as scored cylinders or a failed intermediate shaft bearing. Those are added to address the actual fault, which is what the packages below cover.
Common package prices
Example packages are based on a 2006 997 3.8. Both packages include the base rebuild plus:
- All new high-strength aluminium alloy nickel-silicon plated closed-deck wet liners, all six cylinders

Full rebuild terms and conditions
Standard guarantee
Subject to proper maintenance and care and for normal road use following the procedures set out below. Engines used for racing and extreme track use are not covered.
Parts
New parts are guaranteed against failure for the duration of the manufacturer’s warranty, which is 24,000 miles or 24 months for gaskets and seals (for a gasket or seal to have failed it must be what Hartech deem significant), timing chains and guide rails, crankshaft bearings, the latest-design intermediate shaft and bearing, Porsche-supplied pistons (subject to Porsche stipulations), Hartech cylinders, the Hartech intermediate shaft spindle, Hartech duplex intermediate shaft conversions and other Porsche-supplied parts, and 12,000 miles or 12 months (whichever sooner) for any aftermarket pistons. New intermediate shaft bearings of the earlier, smaller designs, and used parts, are not guaranteed.
The guarantee does not extend to the original customer’s parts re-used, including future issues with cylinder heads (cracking, valve seats becoming loose, valve failure), issues with the original manufacturer’s cylinders (Hartech cylinders are guaranteed, and a strengthened original cylinder is guaranteed against cracking unless as a result of another failure having a knock-on effect, such as a foreign body entering the combustion chamber). In the event of a claim for a faulty component supplied by Porsche we reserve the right to follow Porsche’s claim procedures at the time and the restrictions they may enforce. If they decline the claim we reserve the right to decline in turn, and that decision is final.
Labour
All Hartech labour is guaranteed for 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever first.
General
Faults caused by track and competition use, incorrect fitting (if not fitted by Hartech), overheating, neglect and abuse are excluded. Running in must not be carried out using a low-friction oil and the running-in guidance must be observed, followed by an oil and filter change using Millers Nanodrive CFS 10w50 NT, and the car serviced to the Porsche service schedule by a competent approved specialist using genuine Porsche parts or OEM parts of equivalent quality. Documentary evidence of oil changes and servicing will be needed to support a claim, and for an engine Hartech did not fit, acceptable evidence of the mileage at fitting. In the event of a claim the oil will be analysed to ensure the correct oil has been used.
We will only consider claims under our engine guarantee if we are contacted before any investigation or work is carried out. We may require the whole car, complete with engine fitted, to be returned to us at the owner’s cost until the cause of the fault is identified by us. When it is, the customer or their representative is free to inspect the results; the work will be carried out without charge by us if it was our responsibility, and if not, a fair and reasonable charge will be made to rectify a fault not caused by us. We do not cover charges levied by other parties, nor the cost of returning or delivering engines or vehicles to and from Hartech, even in the event of a successful claim.
For a claim to be valid the fault must be caused by a guaranteed component or defective workmanship, rather than a guaranteed component being damaged as a knock-on effect of the failure of a non-guaranteed component, and Hartech must agree that a fault is present. Hartech’s opinion is final.
Given the age of these engines, components may have stress-relieved and their positions may differ slightly from new. Combined with features of the original design and its seals and gaskets, this may on rare occasions make sealing difficult. Hartech will do their best to resolve this, but unless customers are prepared to replace further components with new units, Hartech cannot be held responsible for oil weeps unless caused by defective workmanship or faulty components that Hartech supplied. In the event of a noise that does not affect function or reliability, Hartech’s opinion of whether further action is needed is final.
We draw your attention to any declined recommendations. These are made for good reasons, and if a problem emerges in an area where we recommended action that was declined, we accept no responsibility and are not liable for any consequences. Examples include declining cylinder head overhauls and then finding a badly seated valve, declining further cylinders and then finding scoring in the original cylinders, or declining new timing chains and then finding one snaps or stretches.
We do not accept liability or compatibility responsibility for aftermarket products requested by customers, even if supplied by Hartech for convenience, such as performance exhausts, clutches and flywheels. For engines Hartech have not fitted, we must be notified at the time of fitting of the mileage, operating hours and stored over-revs recorded in the DME; failure to do so may affect a claim.
Other points to note
The oil filter should be replaced after the first 50 to 100 miles and will usually contain a small build-up of debris including a small amount of surplus sealant; for engines fitted by Hartech this is done before you take delivery. High-octane fuel must be used: Porsche specify a minimum of 98 RON, and Shell V-Power at 99 RON is the best readily available. A Nikasil-plated cylinder is extremely durable and is cross-hatched, which gives excellent oil retention and low wear, but as a result you may see slightly higher oil consumption. A brief puff of oil smoke on start-up is not in itself a concern.
A running-in period of around 100 hours, generally 2,000 to 3,000 miles in normal UK driving, is needed for the new components, particularly cylinders and piston rings, to bed in. Drive spiritedly while avoiding over-aggressive driving; once properly warm, do not be too gentle, avoid labouring the engine (such as a steep hill in too high a gear), vary the load and revs, and do not restrict revving. Avoid long periods at idle; long journeys are encouraged and frequent short journeys should be minimised. We will happily talk this through on the phone, 01204 302 809 option 1. We initially use a basic oil to help running in and then switch to Millers Nanodrive CFS 10w50 NT+ once the running period is complete.
For engines fitted elsewhere, it is absolutely critical that the inlet and exhaust systems are properly stripped down and thoroughly cleaned. There have been cases where another garage fitted the entire inlet system without stripping and cleaning it internally, and debris found its way back into the engine and caused damage. It is very easy to miss pieces of debris and pockets of oil, particularly after a component failure such as a crank or intermediate shaft bearing or a valve seat. The oil and air separator should be replaced and all pipes properly cleaned or replaced. We cannot accept liability for damage caused by a foreign body entering the engine.

The workshop behind the work
In addition to the nine-ramp workshop there is a dedicated engine strip-down and cleaning room, a fully equipped machine shop, two engine assembly clean rooms, a rolling road and engine dynamometer, and purpose-built racking for the components removed during the process.

The engine team, a full-time precision machinist and three rebuilders with over 40 years’ combined engine remanufacture experience including Porsche GB engine training, is headed by Technical Director Barry Hart. His engineering career includes the design and manufacture of racing motorcycle and car components for Armstrong, where he was technical director of engine development, Ducati, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Lotus Formula 1, as well as composite development in the aerospace industry. He also sits on the steering committee of the University of Bolton’s Centre for Advanced Performance Engineering.
